FAQ
Is there a hot work permit template in Word I can edit?
Yes. The whole kit is a .docx. Fill in your site's values, then print it or save it as a PDF for your crew. Write-in rows are at least 0.30 in tall for handwriting.
What does OSHA's hot work rule actually say?
The federal welding, cutting and brazing rule is 29 CFR 1910.252. It sets fire precautions such as a 35-foot (10.7 m) distance for combustibles, a fire watch for at least a half hour after welding or cutting is finished, and authorization to proceed "preferably in the form of a written permit." Read 1910.252(a) in full and set your site's values with your competent person.
Where does NFPA 51B fit in?
NFPA 51B is the Standard for Fire Prevention During Welding, Cutting, and Other Hot Work. NFPA lists the current edition as 2024. 1910.252 itself points to the 1962 edition of NFPA 51B, incorporated by reference. Many sites and insurers follow the current edition, so check which one applies to you.
Does the kit include a hot work permit checklist?
The HW-1 permit carries the prohibited conditions and the precautions to check before work starts. HW-5 is a separate hazard assessment, and HW-2 logs the fire watch and post-work monitoring through release.
Does it cover gas testing?
Yes. HW-3 is a gas test log. Your site sets the gas test limits in Section 3. Write only real readings.
Can I get it as a PDF?
The kit ships as Word so you can edit it. Once your site has filled in its values, save it as a PDF to print or share.

Blank template only. It isn't a legal document, a filled permit, a fire risk assessment or approval by any regulator. Your site adapts it, checks it against the rules that apply to you, and has its competent person review it before use.
